Extractions Q & A

What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure to remove a tooth from the bone. If you have a severely decayed or damaged tooth, you may need to have it carefully removed by a qualified Nukoa dentist.

Why would I need a tooth extraction?

You may need a tooth extraction to:

  • Remove infected teeth
  • Make room for proper tooth alignment
  • Remove badly damaged teeth in preparation for implants
  • Remove a baby tooth to make room for the permanent tooth
  • Repair over-crowding (where there are more teeth than can fit in the mouth)
  • Remove an irreversibly damaged tooth that’s causing pain and complications

One of the most common reasons people get a tooth extraction is tooth decay. When tooth decay makes your tooth unsalvageable, the damaged teeth may require removal for the benefit of your future dental health.

Your Nukoa dentist has your best interests at heart and only recommends an extraction if it’s necessary. An infection can spread from one tooth to another, so quickly removing infected pulp is crucial to saving as many of your teeth as possible.

Protect yourself by brushing and flossing regularly and be sure to keep up to date with your regular dental checkups and cleanings.

What can I expect during a tooth extraction?

First, your Nukoa dentist performs a thorough examination with X-rays. Depending on your case, they may need to cut your gum tissue to expose the tooth or even cut the tooth to make it easier to remove.

Using specialized instruments, Dr. Hernandez or Dr. Urrego-Torres gently extract the tooth from the gum. Next, they apply stitches or place a pad or gauze over the hole.

After your tooth extraction procedure, you’ll need multiple follow-up visits to make sure everything heals properly and healthily.
